Internet Speed Requirements for Clear Calls

VoIP (Voice over IP) turns your voice into digital data packets. For calls to sound clear, your internet connection needs sufficient speed (“bandwidth”) and stability. “Choppy” audio, robotic voices, or dropped calls usually indicate your network is overloaded or unstable.

This section explains how to calculate requirements and prepare your network for flawless voice quality.

Calculating Bandwidth Needs

Voice calls require relatively little data compared to streaming video, but they still require consistent, uninterrupted data flow.

Table 1: Bandwidth Requirements by Codec

Codec NameQuality LevelBandwidth Per CallBest Usage
G.711HD / Landline Quality100 kbpsOffice with high-speed internet
G.729Standard / Compressed30 kbpsRemote locations / Slow DSL
  • Upload Speed is Key: Most internet plans are asymmetrical (e.g., 100 Mbps download / 10 Mbps upload). Since a phone conversation is two-way, upload speed is usually the bottleneck.
  • Packet Overhead: The numbers above include the “digital envelope” (headers) required to send the audio, not just the audio itself.

Recommendation: Calculate bandwidth needs based on the maximum number of people on the phone at the same time (Peak Concurrent Calls).

Bandwidth Hogs (Video and Cloud)

Your phone calls compete with every other device on your network. High-bandwidth applications can crowd out voice data, causing “packet loss.”

Table 2: Common Bandwidth Consumers

ApplicationBandwidth UsageEquivalent Voice Calls
Zoom Group Call (HD)3.0 Mbps30 Calls
YouTube (1080p)5.0 Mbps50 Calls
Spotify Stream0.15 Mbps1.5 Calls
Google Drive SyncMax AvailableAll Calls (if not limited)
  • Burst Traffic: Syncing large files to Google Drive utilizes “burst” transmission. This tries to use 100% of available speed to finish the task quickly. If this happens during a phone call, the audio will stutter.

Latency, Jitter, and Packet Loss

Speed is not the only factor. The quality of the connection matters just as much.

  • Latency (Lag): If latency is high (over 150ms), you get an annoying delay where you and the customer talk over each other.
  • Jitter: Variation in latency causing robotic or scrambled voice. The fix is often using a wired Ethernet connection.

Why Choose Cloud VoIP

  • Cost Efficiency: Runs on existing internet; no separate phone lines.
  • High Definition: HD Voice codecs sound better than copper lines.
  • Mobility: Take your business line anywhere via app.

Considerations

  • Network Dependency: Requires stable internet. Buying a secondary backup line (LTE/5G failover) is recommended.

Quality of Service (QoS) Settings

You cannot always buy more speed, but you can manage traffic jams. Network routers use a feature called Quality of Service (QoS).

  • Prioritization Rules: QoS instructs your router to treat voice traffic as more important than YouTube video or email downloads.
  • VLAN Implementation: Many IT experts recommend putting phones on their own Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN). This keeps voice traffic completely separate from computer and printer traffic.

Summary

Do not guess on bandwidth. Use the calculator to determine your exact needs. Always prioritize Upload Speed and use Wired Connections for critical phones.
